To boost its faculty’s research output, the College of Engineering, Architecture, and Technology (CEAT) of Capiz State University (CAPSU)-Main Campus conducted a capability training on writing research publications for ISI and Scopus-indexed journals. The training, with the theme “Empowering Faculty Researchers: Enhancing Skills in Writing for ISI/Scopus-Indexed Journals Through AI-Integrated Publication Strategies,” was held on August 14, 2025, at the Computer Laboratory, COED Building. Participants included faculty members from the electrical, mechanical, civil engineering, and architecture departments.

The participants were formally welcomed by Engr. Joel C. Villaruz, Dean of CEAT. This was followed by an inspirational message from Dr. Cleo Jude Joaquin, Focal Person of the CAPSU-Main campus. Afterward, Dr. Leo Andrew B. Biclar, Vice-President for Research, Development, and Extension, gave a message highlighting CEAT’s existing strengths in extension services and quality education. He noted the college’s track record of producing topnotchers in board examinations but pointed out a key area for improvement: increasing faculty research and publication output. He challenged the faculty members to conduct more research, stating, “It not only helps us grow professionally but also justifies our existence as faculty members in a state university. We are supposed to disseminate research-based knowledge and practices.”

Building on this challenge, the invited resource person, Dr. Karlo S. Sira (Professor VI and IPMO Chair at Iloilo Science and Technology University), led the main training session. During his discussion, Dr. Sira guided the participants through the fundamentals of academic publishing, from proper paper formatting to the essential sections required by journals. He also provided specific insights into the sections required for developmental and engineering papers, including the description of the device, design criteria, design preparation, and testing.

In line with the training’s theme, Dr. Sira introduced the faculty to AI tools like Grammarly and QuillBot, demonstrating how these tools can help in crafting and refining their research papers. He also showed participants how to navigate the Scopus website to identify suitable journals for their research articles.

The afternoon session put the morning’s lessons into practice as participants presented their research articles. Dr. Sira offered constructive feedback on each paper, helping the faculty fine-tune their work for submission to their target journals.

Ultimately, the training provided CEAT faculty with practical insights and strategies to prepare their research papers more efficiently, significantly increasing their chances of being published in reputable academic journals.
